Watershed Erosion & Sedimentation Inventory Procedure
This is going to be a BIG project and techincal. Our instructor, Roger Windhorn -from Champaign IL, knows the subject so well he makes it sound simple. Sharon Hartzold, also works with the data.
They have used this process in 35 other watersheds. This program was put together 6-7 years ago. We were told that this could be a 2 year project.
The USDA funding for stream bank erosion comes thru EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program). It started in California and has made its way to the Midwest.
We will be studying sediment and river/creek bank erosion.
There are 46 sites in the Yellow Creek Watershed to study. Each site is 160 acres. There are a few sites in JoDavies County and a few in Carroll County.
There are also 30? to 40? creek sites to study. Each creek site will be about 1/4 mile long. The creek sites will most likely be studied by canoe or kayak.
All sites were chosen by Roger randomly based on his expertise using a topographical map. The map of the Yellow Creek Watershed is about 7 feet by 7 feet and hanging in the Soil & Water office on south Galena Ave showing the test sites. very impressive!
The program will be led by someone in the SWCD office.
